Stopping

General Stopping Tips
Always look ahead for possible stops and begin braking early to ensure a smooth stop.
Use your right foot for both brake and gas to avoid stepping on both pedals at the same time.
Sit properly and press the brake pedal firmly and evenly for better control.
In a manual transmission vehicle, shift into a lower gear before starting downhill to help control speed and reduce heavy braking.
Stopping at Stop Signs and Red Lights
You must come to a complete stop for stop signs and red traffic lights.
If there is a stop line, stop just before it.
If there is no stop line, stop at the crosswalk (marked or not).
If there is no crosswalk or sidewalk, stop at the edge of the intersection.
Only proceed when the way is clear and it is safe to enter the intersection.
Stopping at Railway Crossings
All public railway crossings in Ontario are marked with red and white 'X' signs. Slow down, look, and listen for trains.
If a train is approaching, stop at least 5 metres from the nearest rail or gate.
Never race a train to the crossing. It can take up to two kilometres for a train to stop.
Wait until all signals stop flashing and gates are fully raised before crossing.
Stopping at School Crossings
You must stop when a school-crossing guard displays a red and white stop sign.
Remain stopped until all pedestrians and the crossing guard have completely left the roadway.
If unsure, wait until everyone has fully cleared the crossing before proceeding.
Stopping for School Buses
Stop for a school bus with its upper alternating red lights flashing, whether you are behind or approaching from the front.
If you are behind the bus, stop at least 20 metres away.
On a road with a median, only vehicles coming from behind the bus must stop.
Do not proceed until the bus moves or the lights have stopped flashing.
Failing to stop can result in heavy fines and demerit points.
Stopping for Pedestrian Crossovers
Pedestrian crossovers let people cross where there are no traffic lights.
Yellow lights may flash to warn drivers that pedestrians want to cross.
Drivers (and cyclists) must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in the crossover.
Do not pass any vehicle within 30 metres of a pedestrian crossover.
Proceed only when pedestrians and guards have fully cleared the roadway.
