Vehicle insurance and registration

Auto insurance – it’s the law!

Ontario has compulsory automobile insurance: every registered vehicle must be insured.
You must show proof of insurance before registering a vehicle or renewing the registration.
Driving without insurance means no coverage is provided at all.
Police may require drivers to produce a valid driver’s licence, vehicle ownership papers, and proof of insurance (pink slip).

Registration

Registration consists of licence plates and a vehicle permit.
Licence plates in Ontario follow a plate-to-owner system (plates stay with the owner when selling a vehicle).
Plates can be returned to a ServiceOntario centre if you don’t plan on using them on another vehicle.

New residents

New Ontario residents have 30 days to register their vehicles.
Registering requires a safety standards certificate, proof of insurance, vehicle import forms (if applicable), and the previous vehicle permit.
Obtain a permit and Ontario licence plates at a ServiceOntario centre.

Protect yourself from auto insurance fraud

Use a licensed insurance company, agent, or broker. Check licences with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) or the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO).
After a collision, gather detailed information: names, addresses, licence plate and driver’s licence numbers, insurance details, and photos of the scene.
Be suspicious if you are pressured or offered money by tow truck operators or directed to specific services.
Never sign blank forms for health-care services or repairs.
Demand detailed repair and medical bills and review them carefully.
